Saint Martin de Porres
St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579. His father was a knight from Spain and his mother a freed slave. As a young boy, he was trained as a barber and learned to take care of the sick and needy. He also had a deep love for the poor. St. Martin felt called to serve the Church as a lay brother. At 15 years old he entered the Dominican Friary in Lima. St. Martin loved to do the lowliest & most undesired tasks each day, including laundry, cleaning, cooking, and caring for the sick. St. Martin had a special love for animals, especially dogs, cats, and mice. He would feed the animals and give them much attention and love. St. Martin opened many orphanages and raised money for children and the poor by begging on the streets of Lima. God gave St. Martin many graces to live a holy life including humility, gentleness, wisdom, & the gift of healing. He once healed the Archbishop of Mexico with the touch of his hand! When St. Martin died in 1639, thousands of people whose lives he had personally touched came to pay their respects. Martin was canonized a Saint by Pope St. John XXIII in 1962.
